Indoor Air Quality, Why it Matters?
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is critical for health, as poor air quality can lead to a range of health issues. Let's break down some of the key components, including carbon dioxide (CO₂), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and formaldehyde (HCHO).
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Levels
Carbon dioxide is a naturally occurring gas, but elevated indoor levels can indicate poor ventilation and can cause discomfort and health problems. The table shows the ranges and health impacts.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
VOCs are a large group of chemicals that can easily become vapours or gases. They are released from various household products such as paints, cleaning supplies, and building materials.
Formaldehyde (HCHO)
Formaldehyde is a VOC that is released from materials such as plywood, particleboard, and household products like glues and paints. They can also be released from combustion sources like cigarettes, wood-burning stoves, and kerosene heaters.
Particulate Matter (PM2.5)
Particulate matter consists of tiny particles suspended in the air, and PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 microns) can cause significant health problems when inhaled.
Particulate Matter (PM10)
Particulate matter consists of tiny particles suspended in the air, and PM10 (particles smaller than 10 microns) can cause significant health problems when inhaled.
